Never forget. Death and destruction. 25 years ago, on st Nicholas day, one of the worst days in Dubrovnik’s history took place

On December 6th, 1991, the attempted Siege of Dubrovnik began. Twenty five years later, this day is marked as one of the most terrifying days in Dubrovnik’s history. The sixth of December is also the day when we honor st Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, merchants and children.

In the Old town of Dubrovnik itself, there were more than 700 homes, buildings and objects that were hit by the missiles and projectiles, leaving the area in flames and citizens of Dubrovnik in panic. Numerous bombs were raining down from the sky, forcing many to leave their homes. During this siege, the heaviest attack in Dubrovnik’s history, 19 people were killed and 60 injured.

Let’s take a moment to honor and recognize the sacrifice of many brave men and women who gave their lives to protect our nation.
